Excercise 4: A short scene about truth

A SHORT SCENE ABOUT TRUTH
Text: Erik Uddenberg

A
Sorry.
(Pause.)
Sorry.
(Pause.)
Didn’t you hear me? Sorry!
(Pause.)
I said I’m sorry! I said I’m sorry!

B
I don’t care what you say.

A
I said I’m sorry.

B
Saying you’re sorry isn’t enough.
(Pause.)
“Sorry” “sorry” “sorry” “sorry”!
(Pause.)
You don’t even know what you’re apologizing for.
(Pause.)
Tell the truth.

A
I am telling the truth.

B
No, you’re not.

A
Yes, I am!

B
No, you’re not.

A
Tell me what to say then.

B
The truth.

AN ANGEL
“The truth”

B
You took it, didn’t you?

A
No, I didn’t!

B
Why don’t you tell it like it is?

B
I am! I didn’t take it!

B
I know that you took it.

A
No.

B
Why is it broken then? I haven’t touched it.
(Pause.)
Tell the truth.

A
I didn’t take it.

AN ANGEL
Truth, is that statement about the world that works. If it works to say that the world consists of
atoms, then that’s the way it is.

B
You didn’t?

A
No!

AN ANGEL
No one has seen atoms. But theories based on atoms work, and so it is.

A
If I said that I took it, you would only get angrier.

B
No, I wouldn’t.

A
Yes, you would.

B
Did you take it then?

A
No.

B
Why did you say that?

A
Because you would.

B
Why did you say sorry then, if you didn’t do it?

A
So you wouldn’t get angry.

AN ANGEL
And when we don’t know what works. Then there’s no truth.

B
You’re not telling the truth.

A
Yes!

B
No, you’re not.

AN ANGEL
The truth is what you say so things will be good. And if there is nothing to say that makes
things good, then there is no truth.

A
Yes I am! I’m TELLING THE TRUTH!
